Mazepocalypse

"Mazepocalypse" is an independent game created solely by me. It combines gameplay reminiscent of arcade classics with survival horror inspired combat and aesthetics.

Every aspect of the game was done by me, including the art assets, programming, sound design, game design, UI, etc.

Shown off on this page is the trailer for the game, as well as in-game screenshots to show off the various menus and gameplay. In addition, images of the process behind the making of the game are included, featuring rough sketches of characters and costumes, an exploration of alternate costumes for one of the characters, and a prototype of the character select screen.

Initial Scenario, Enemy, and Boss Plans

This page shows the very initial draft of the game's level and enemy designs.

By this point in production, the basic gameplay loop was complete and I was focusing my efforts on creating memorable enemies, bosses, and hazards for players to encounter to overcome.

Initial Character Sketches

These are the initial concept sketches for four characters featured in Mazepocalypse.

These designs would eventually go on to be digitized and used as art assets for the finished character select screen.

Alternate Costume Sketches

Mazepocalypse features 2 alternate costumes for each of the 8 playable characters.

These sketches are initial concept arts for those various alternate outfits.

Alternate Outfit Color & Design Exploration

After sketching out some outfit concepts, the best designs are chosen to be rendered in color before deciding which will make the cut.

Once a costume is chosen, production begins on the 2D sprites that make up a character's appearance. This includes an on-map sprite, a combat sprite, a close up portrait sprite, and a full body sprite.

Prototype Character Select Screen

This early prototype of Mazepocalypse shows the very first rendition of the character select screen, featuring only 2 characters and a very different layout from the finished product.

This very different version of the game had characters using "Power Points" (abbreviated PP) as opposed to "Ammo" which is used in the final game.
